I think it's mostly student-driven. Some departments are closing because fewer are majoring in those subjects. When there is high demand for a subject, they tend to open more classes. I wouldn't say the students don't value education, but costs are a factor. (My 2nd kid is currently a senior.)

I don't disagree with you that education has intrinsic value (glad I went!), but also that math does matter unfortunately.... that is probably a big reason why we are seeing a change toward more career-driven majors. If you have to take out $$$ in student loans, you need to be able to pay them off.

I suspect a lot fewer people would be willing to pay tens of thousands or more per year if it is regarded as pure personal enrichment unrelated to employment.

Given the cost of college, I suspect it would be even worse for higher ed if those got decoupled, though.

Education =\= job training. But the more it costs, the more the person paying is going to wonder if the less obviously relevant parts are worth it. The benefit is they teach you how to think and be mentally flexible, which is useful as a broad skill, even if I’ve never used trig since then.

The shingles vax has a nasty reputation, but it really wasn’t that bad for me. Mild feeling under the weather. The Covid shot was worse. So, no guarantee it will be bad.
