Replacing my addiction to the blue bird for the blue butterfly. It’s just my opinions
5/5. The writing here is so sharp and almost rhythmic as we follow a woman’s plan to sleep for an entire year. One of the more unlikable and yet compelling protagonists in literature imo. She’s scarily relatable, at least to me. Treat your friends better than she treats hers!

5/5. A companion piece to the previous novel, The Passenger, that elevates that story and provides deeper insight to Alicia. I didn’t think anything could beat The Passenger in terms of sadness but my god. The last sentence of this will make anyone with a heart take a pause.

5/5. This was my 2nd time reading this and it’s honestly my favorite McCarthy. It’s a difficult book to describe plot-wise. Where the book shines is the discussions the characters have about sin, God, mathematics, and other topics that are too grand to describe in a Bluesky post.

5/5. 2nd Llosa book I’ve read. It’s definitely more mystical than Bad Girl. I wouldn’t recommend reading this one in public lol. Llosa excels at putting the reader into the mind of the protagonist in this surreal, fucked up drama.

5/5. This author died last month so I was curious and checked this out. Plot-wise, it’s a tale as old as time. Boy falls in love with a girl who will never love him the same way he does. Llosa’s writing elevates the story and the last 1/3 of this novel is absolutely devastating.

4/5. A love letter to Brooklyn and the beautiful, flawed and real people who live there. I loved being transported into this world. The main character, Olga, deals with so much and all I wanted for her was to have the freedom to truly be herself and be happy. Gonzalez is a brilliant writer.

5/5. A failed artist finds himself trapped in the same property as his ex-gf and her husband (his former best friend) during the Pandemic. Loved the obvious toxic triangle and the protagonist coming to terms with his past. Hard to put down.

4/5. Plot-wise this is a very basic, tragic western romance. The sentences though are some of the most beautifully written and funny I’ve read in a long time. Cormac McCarthy-esque but easier to digest.

5/5. A collection of short stories with the common theme of rejection (duh). Some characters show up in multiple stories but you could read only one and be fine. I haven’t read anything else that perfectly captures how fucked up and at times hilarious modern dating is. Odd to recommend but here I am

4/5. I’ll admit it, I like flowery sentences. Give me TONS of descriptions of the land, weather, and people. A melancholy coming of age story where a teen tries to take a pregnant wolf back to Mexico. Spoilers: it does not go well.

3/5. A matter of fact account on a black officer infiltrating the Colorado Springs branch of the KKK. Proves just how dumb and lame these racists and their ideas are. Again, I wanted more but higher ups literally stopped our man from further investigation. Fuck MAGA

3/5. Borrowed this from my buddy. Regardless of how you feel about McConaughey personally the man is interesting. Just wish I got more. Some sections were rants. Some of his thoughts on life, dating, work etc are what I needed to hear at the time so for that thanks Matt !
