Time for a new map! This one is my concept of a light rail network for Melbourne's east. Centred on converting and extending the Alamein line to Chadstone, Monash, and Rowville, it would complement gaps in the rail network and deliver fast, reliable public transport to much of the eastern suburbs.

This is perhaps the opposite of a fantasy map. It imagines a world where Melbourne lost its tram network postwar like so many other cities and only rebuilt a small light rail system in recent decades. An interesting map to make, but one I'm very very glad isn't reality.

It does appear on the VicEmergency map as a location just west of Glenthompson. But if it isn't on most maps or similar resources you have to wonder how useful it is in emergency communications

Big changes for Melbourne's tram network. Today a joint venture between a French transport multinational and an Australian engineering company takes over operations from a joint venture between a French transport multinational and an Australian engineering company

Went on a visit to Ararat today, including the wonderful Ararat railway museum and a trip home on the Overland. A great little day trip

The Victorian government has announced a plan for 50 activity centres with denser housing around train stations. @yimbymelbourne have made a list of where they think the next 25 should be using lots of data.
So here's where I think the next 25 should go, based mostly on vibes.

great to see CBTC being rolled out across the network!

It's election day in the ACT! To celebrate here's a fantasy rail map. In this future Canberra, light rail lines have been added on three new corridors, plus a faster heavy rail line connecting more far-flung suburbs.
Is it unrealistic? Probably. But it was fun to make.

Melbourne's railways have changed forever

This plan could deliver improved services quickly and (relatively) cheaply. Eventually a new tunnel is probably unavoidable, so here's a bonus long-term map I didn't post on Twitter, of what I'd like to see, decades from now:

In a decade or so, the map might look like this. When (if) airport rail is built, the Bendigo line has to branch off earlier, requiring a flyover east of Sunshine. This could be combined with quad track to Melton to re-segregate services and slightly improve suburban frequencies.

Oh cool I get to post these maps again now.
How I would deal with capacity constraints on the RRL and improve service to Melbourne's west as quickly and cheaply as possible, the map:

Lunchtime in the CBD on a beautiful day and this lovely little green space is proving very popular. Opened a couple of years ago, it was created by repurposing road space into a beautiful new park for people to enjoy. We should have these basically everywhere. They're so good.

Friday was (probably) the last day of the Warrnambool line being fully run by N sets. I went riding up and down the line and got a few photos of some once-unremarkable scenes, now on their way out.

This is signal CBE795, protecting the approach to Cranbourne station from the abandoned South Gippsland line. No train has passed it in decades, yet it still stands, waiting for a train that will never come

And a couple of other interesting ones: a stack of disruption signs in a car boot, wow the Frankston line really is frequent!, all clear down the line, and uhh, whatever this is

Yesterday was the last day of trains at Parkdale station before it closed for level crossing removal works. Here are some of my favourite shots from the day
