And in regards to the underrepresentation of women. I think it's multi-factor so I'm pensive about handing out directives or a diagnosis.

Regardless of gender I try to chime in best I can with supporting people I believe in that contribute to developer culture.

Look.

I've been around since just before the release of WordPress 4. 8-10 years in professional capacity doing mostly WordPress.

And your content (and Brian Coords) is so good that I want to petition the WordPress Foundation to make you guys do the "LaraCasts of WordPress".

Yeah I mean I started in college around 2008 with Ubuntu ~4 from a CD when it still had like Gnome 2 and the brown/beige design scheme 😂

SO... I wouldn't wanna mainline Ubuntu. I have gripes beyond that like their "freemium" injections into basic terminal applications, collecting data and stuff

Yeah I've seen the Rhino hypetrain on some tubefluencer vids and whatnot.

I have a somewhat childish gripe where I applied for a job as a Web Dev at Canonical and they literally cycled my application from approving it first to then have me cite which schools I went to before autorejecting.

I come from a small town in Sweden and I met my Portuguese native partner and subsequently moved to Portugal last year after talking in a disturbingly niche Facebook group for fans of "Sludge Metal". One for the grandkids, no?😂

There is nothing special about being a Linux user!
December 28, 2024 at 4:59 PM
Yeah, I'm not experienced enough nor was I around for that. But I got stuck behind my first computer in 1995 and I recall IRC chats and "Communities".. smaller services than MySpace basically where you got to know people. These communities often organized meetups. Felt more up close and personal.

Been using Linux for 17 years now. Don't really feel home anywhere. I did Ubuntu to 465 different flavor distros to Arch, pivoted away from Arch because too volatile for professional work so I opted for Fedora. Got a SER6 PRO mini PC and Fedoras packages really did not play well.. might do Debian!

I think I also qualify as Old People™ at 32 and I never got into UseNet in it's heyday unfortunately. These days I only hear it being talked about as a "means of Piracy".

Yeah like "a new view-style for Instagram to try to conquer the falling Twitter demographic", effectively
December 28, 2024 at 3:13 PM
I hope it can have the same effect on me!

They have had talks about allowing ActivityPub integration, effectively making it so that BlueSky-users could interface with Mastodon/Pleroma-users in the future and use BlueSky to sub to them.

Then again, Threads also promised this and it has yet to happen.

I'll be upfront and say that I haven't had good discourse on any social media for the past years. From being chronically online to getting work from LinkedIn and finding my partner on Facebook... I just rarely have good friendly interactions on social media these days. But I like when it happens!
