We paid into the system throughout our working lives, trusting that support would be there if we fell ill. I didn’t choose this condition—and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. This demonisation of disability must stop.

Forgive my cynicism, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding. With the proposed tightening of the daily living criteria for PIP, many people like me may well fail the revised tests.

While the government claims that individuals with degenerative, lifelong conditions will be protected from repeated assessments, I remain skeptical. My understanding is that I will still be required to undergo one final review—despite the incurable nature of my condition.

My salary expectations and the cost of necessary workplace accommodations make me an unappealing candidate. Furthermore, as someone who is immunosuppressed, working in a busy, air-conditioned environment would pose a serious risk to my health.

Employers are unlikely to hire chronically ill or disabled candidates when they have a larger, less complex talent pool to choose from.
