The following Sept., we spent two weeks at TelStra hq in Melbourne. Mike went with me this time. We had a large corner room on the 19th floor of what was then the Hilton on the Park. The park being the Melbourne Cricket Ground, site of the 1956 summer olympics.

One of our joint clients was TelStra, AKA Telecom Australia. I and another developer and my boss, and his boss, went down under in Jan. 94. We split time between the TelStra office in Sydney and NorTel labs at the University of Wollongong.

In the mid-90s, I worked for a small software company, developing a rules-based program for provisioning centrex office phone switches. The switches were made by NorTel, so we had a cooperative arrangement with them.

Kwanza is the monetary unit of Angola, and is apparently not etymologically related to Kwanzaa, the African-American festival. I've been to Wollongong, but I don't think I've been to Woolloomooloo. Australian Scrabble must be fun. ;)

When asked what it was doing there, the student insisted it was a '1'. When I pointed out that it was not, they looked at the keyboard and said that they were taught to type on a typewriter without a '1', using the 'l' instead.
