Temporary shelter solves unsheltered homelessness (see right to shelter cities). We may never sold actual homelessness in our lifetime. We must do what we can.

But you can protect unsheltered people with shelter as a first step, and that is Portland's plan. Fin.

Because there is no place with such a difficult to place unsheltered population like the west coast currently has that has succeeded. Right to shelter cities have done a good job of sheltering almost all their folks who need it though. You cannot solve a behavioral health crisis just with housing.

The data doesn't hold up. Latest examples are SLC and Utah not working either though for a time it looked like Housing First did work for them. Multnomah County has followed this for 10 years. Do you think it is working?

A nice slogan, but like I said devil is in the details. Even in Vienna they have exceptions.
November 13, 2025 at 8:33 AM
I think you are railing against the wrong people. Portland is full of almost all blue left wing voters. Your real enemy is in the White House. However there is something about the populism of the DSA that seems to require manufacturing local enemies and it is depressing to watch.

And it is not socialist to let people live outdoors. It is however dangerous, neglectful, and unethical.
November 13, 2025 at 8:24 AM
Again, ignoring the fact that social housing doesn't solve the unsheltered homelessness who are not stable enough to live it is key to understanding why we also need also need shelters, permanent supportive housing and lots of behavioral health services.

I don't feel my ass is gotten. I think that this movement has drawn some gullible dreamers who are being led on by DSA councilors. The amendment failed because it was terrible and so were the optics today.
November 13, 2025 at 8:20 AM
The left a few issue out.
November 13, 2025 at 8:17 AM
I am a social democrat. But if these councilors are telling you social housing will solve unsheltered homelessness they are fudging. First off there is a population issue like I said, secondly this is something that takes generations to build, as they mentioned in their findings meeting.
November 13, 2025 at 8:16 AM
Sorry to hear that.
November 13, 2025 at 8:14 AM
You aren't making sense and you ignore the details, where the devil hangs out. No country that has social housing can place everyone into it, and like Vienna they have a separate track for people who need stability or otherwise. Dunphy explained this well in September to the city.

You clearly don't understand addiction to fentanyl and methamphetamine. It does disqualify people if they cannot be safe in the home, and this often affects those living nearby. Some buildings are having trouble getting insurance due to incidents of people placed when they were not ready.
November 13, 2025 at 8:05 AM
? I think you have a fantasy going on of "we'll just seize these homes." Good luck!
November 13, 2025 at 8:03 AM
Their instability doesn't allow them to live in regular housing until they are stabilized. This is a thing.
November 13, 2025 at 7:55 AM
How? Who owns these houses? What on earth are you talking about lol. Details please.
November 13, 2025 at 7:54 AM
I have no idea what you mean by vacant homes and what you think can happen with these.
November 13, 2025 at 7:47 AM
Temporary shelters can eradicate unsheltered homeless. You see the result in right to shelter cities.
November 13, 2025 at 7:42 AM
2022 pdx count found that over 40% of the unsheltered population reported a severe mental health disorder, and 37% reported a substance use disorder. California found numbers around 75% for both these. Using my clinical experience I see this regularly walking around town
November 13, 2025 at 7:41 AM
People also have serious addiction that may give them psychotic features, and many have TBIs. We also heard of 40 of 100 having warrants out, for things like failing to register for sex offenses. Not good to have people who prey on others living in camps.
November 13, 2025 at 7:40 AM
And I agree, more daytime shelter is needed. Advocate for this! The county should be helping. They have the real funding.
November 13, 2025 at 7:33 AM
I do not mean to be unkind but you present as slow or like flat earther. Shelter is a short term solution. We don't have a bunch of housing for 7500 unsheltered people right now that often need stabilization before they can live safely in the community. Some will need life long residential care.
November 13, 2025 at 7:33 AM
The report from Vienna per our city council explained that they have a shelter and supportive housing system for people who are not stable enough for social housing. Many of our unsheltered people are not stable.
November 13, 2025 at 7:29 AM
Progressives and socialists pioneered helping such people. The DSA and the "against sweeps" folks have lost the plot. It is no longer 2020.
