I’ve been devastated by the news. The book project, “The Art of Vulnerability: Sexual and Racial Violence, Disability, and Asian/American Performance”, was to be a career capstone. Now my dreams seem infinitely delayed, given my disability issues.

I urge you to do everything within your power to fight back against the President’s agenda and restore funding to the NEH and to the grant recipients who have rightfully earned and were guaranteed support for our work. In my own case, the defunding means that my research will, at best, be delayed for years. At worst, I may have to abandon this project. For a scholar, time off from teaching and administration is the only real way we can advance our research.

This book is the culmination of my life's work; with the rising anti-Asian violence in America and continuing violence against women’s and LGBTQ+ rights and bodies, it is more important than ever. The termination of my grant, and so many others, is a despicable attack on freedom of speech.

I know that people in ASTR and ATHE are trying to coalesce around these issues. I’m hoping that other professional organizations will follow suit.
