Honestly I could’ve said more but I kept it short. Overall I’d give this show an 8/10. The ending was the only weakness tbh.
La Valla | The Barrier Review TLDR The Barrier was an excellent show that rarely held its punches, until the ending. The lack of a S2 is a missed opportunity by Netflix, as there was potential to explore more. The setting took place in a fascist regime knee-deep in a pandemic. I found the overall conflict similar to what happened in Maze Runner, attempting to sacrifice children for “the greater good”, and the writers rarely held back from exploring how cruel fascism truly is. There was a growing sense of frustration as the class disparities held together by The Barrier (pun intended) were repeatedly thrown in our face. Clearly the people were struggling under a military occupation, yet the story emphasized you’re not exempt from the regime no matter how much you cooperate or bootlick. The acting was phenomenal as I grew increasingly angry with certain characters (Looking at you Begoña 🤬). The way some of these characters were moving was downright FEDERAL. They couldn’t WAIT to be given a gold star by the regime, and there truly were some standouts. Alma, the wife of the upper class family, was downright strongest character of the show for all the wrong reasons. She’s extremely manipulative and power hungry, as showcased by the ending where she is now President, and she refused to let anything stop her. There were times I genuinely doubted the authenticity of her relationship with her husband, case in point her ongoing affair with the leader of the Military, but even that was just a means to an end to protect her status and family. Emphasis on family second, because once she learned the military leader was an upcoming Vice President, she conveniently let her relationship weaken to strengthen her position. While she was already cheating While she was already cheating before this revelation, Alma’s previous hesitancies conveniently vanished once a new opportunity for upward mobility appeared. Yet Alma proved she valued the relationship with her husband by allowing him to leave despite being branded as a traitor. I genuinely don’t understand how Begoña survived till the end. She was the biggest snitch I’ve ever seen on screen. A true captain save a nigga to the end. Despite coming face to face with the malevolence of the regime she served as an informant, aka having a child kidnapped so they can torture her body for a cure, she still never so much as apologized. I was truly ready for Emilia to kill her then and there yet was disappointed it never happened. The show was able to kill so many other victims, and serve retribution to select characters furthering the regime, yet Begoña was able to scurry off like the rat she’ll forever be. One thing I wish the story highlighted more was how people were surviving. The beginning of the show seemed to focus on the lower class, yet as the show continued it shifted towards an upper class family dealing with fascism knocking at their doorsteps. Also the ending felt rushed. A six month timeskip is perfectly fine, but why was Alma a woman who’s murdered COUNTLESS children for a “cure” able to become president until elections took place? The events leading up to the ending felt hollow as well. I enjoyed everyone working together to storm the President’s home, but you’re telling me the military didn’t go through with a coup once he was dead?
