at some point, we should FaceTime or zoom or hang out, and then you can say all of these out loud - I am still trying to “hear” them in my head, and I don’t feel confident that I’ve got it right….. and I want to get them right! I don’t have a frame of reference for these terms, what is their origin?

I had this same question!

Absolutely. It’s disgusting that some parents today are talking about bringing back “measles parties”, when an effective vaccine exists. The horror of the original “measles parties” is that parents back then had no other way to protect their children. The horror now is that they do, but won’t.

Thankfully he lived to tell the tale. I just wish that people would listen to stories like his, so that other children don’t have to suffer the way he did.

The ability to predict and plan for a household measles outbreak gave parents the chance to gather supplies they could use to at least keep their sick kids comfortable and monitor their symptoms. And they could schedule a specific timeframe to stay home and nurse their sick kid(s) round the clock.

Measles parties offered desperate parents the only weapon that they could wield against an unstoppable virus: the ability to choose WHEN their children would get infected. This allowed parents the chance to essentially schedule their children’s illness.

….they literally arranged measles parties with other parents. I.e., they deliberately arranged for infected children to eat, drink, and play with uninfected children for several hours. 😱

My grandmother told me that measles parties were actually a thing….. during the 1950s, when there was no vaccine. Parents felt helpless and afraid, knowing that they had no way to protect their children from measles, so……
