I’ve considered New Zealand but felt there wasn’t a visa program that fit our situation (I.e. the retirement visa was too expensive). Australia might be nice and I haven’t looked into their programs.

Portugal is on our list! So I may reach out with questions and advice if you don’t mind.

That’s a good idea. I’ve taken a break from researching and posting over the holidays but am starting to look again and will include that.

What makes it nice is the chalk outline.

…better than in the US at more than double the time off at 26 weeks. I did find that more work is needed on workplace harassment and pay disparity but that's probably true just about everywhere. Students who are US citizens will not require a visa to enter or (2/?) #expat #LivingAbroad #retirement

● Religious make up
● mosquitos - my wife hates mosquitos and since Central America is in the running this one is important to her.

What have we left off the list? What am I not thinking about that I should be?

What industry are y'all in? One thing my wife and I have talked about is whether or not to try to work in a different country before I actually retire. (I'm an accountant)

That's good to know and something I would not have even considered prior to coming to Ireland. 👍

I recon it depends on the lifestyle you want. I feel like for most Americans that haven't saved for retirement, this would be a high bar. Social Security would likely be in the neighborhood of 38,000 euros for a couple. For the retirement I'm planning for this would be doable.

On that note...it's about $1,200 for round trip tickets for 2 adults.

I've never had any interest in private schools. We live in a medium sized town and the public schools are great. I have known some wealthy people that do have their kids in religious private schools and that price sounds about right.

Cost of living is pretty close to that of the US also, but standard of living is also pretty close and as I'm looking that seems to be the trade off. Numbeo has a great comparison tool that you should check out if you are doing this for yourself. #LivingAbroad #Expat #Retirement
