Ah okay! Then i'd say go for Tag Force 3, it cuts out a lot of the fluff so you should be in a duel within 10 minutes, but I think only has like 6 synchro monsters (they were brand new) so it should be more approachable to actually play duels

Then I would recommend Stairway to a distant duel on GBA. You'll be thrown into the action pretty quickly, but the cards only go about as far as 2004, so the mechanics will be less monster spam and more back and forth. It'll give you a better opportunity to learn fundamentals

Maybe one of the game boy or ds games might be relevant if you're looking for lower resolution examples.
I can personally vouch for Duel Academy on GBA, and I remember hearing good things about Spirit Caller

Yeah tag force 5 really throws you into the deep end as far as mechanics.
Depending on what you're looking for exactly, I'd recommend any of the first 3

Oh! And Legacy of the duelist has an actual tutorial mode

It might be worth checking out Legacy of The Duelist, I found that has a much more gradual introduction of mechanics. Its campaign is select duels from the various shows.
Failing that is the first Tag Force on psp, which has everyone start with pretty low complexity decks, and is a "dating sim"
