What a great analysis of that film! I agree with Mr. Chaw that it’s Polanski’s best, though I have a perverse fondness for The Tenant as well.

That’s crazy. Hi Chet!

Murder Party is also very good and funny and smart! And it includes a great Drunk Horse song!

Excellent use(s) of “Mack the Knife.” Great movie.

One thing I truly miss is how much amazing music my pre-teen wannabe-punker self discovered by pouring over the “thank you” lists on records I liked. That and, a few years later, the Trouser Press guide.

This is such a smart way to describe it. Thank you.

If we do band -> general involvement, it opens it up to a lot of weird, fun ones: Squirrel Bait, Roxy Music, Rocket from the Tombs. This is such a great game!

Agreed! It’s a fun question from either perspective. I’d still, personally, argue VU if we limit it to band -> solo work but that’s just personal taste. And you could probably make a strong argument for a couple bands being contenders (but not many - Impressions? Faces?)

It’s a really fun question!

I might argue for VU, but The Modern Lovers breaking up gives you Jonathan Richman, The Cars and Talking Heads.

The Robin Maugham novela on which it’s based is really good, especially as a companion to the film. Pinter made some smart changes!

The Killing series is a bummer because his co-writer, Martin Dugard, wrote a couple great books before becoming O'Reilly's smaller-font guy. Into Africa, which recounts the search for Livingstone, is a page-turner!

The Dirties is good! So is his Operation Avalanche (faux doc but barely horror). Exhibit A is a very upsetting ff film I never see mentioned.

Absolutely one of the most inexplicably unsettling stories I’ve ever read. Maybe my favorite of his.
