I keep expecting some sort of realignment, but like a rubber band an equilibrium keeps restoring itself, which it may again soon if the DPP's polling follows on its current trend.

If someone told me I would be quoted in TIME and that the president likely read it, I would assume that would be good...but no, my quote was used to make the exact opposite point as I had intended:

The U.S. Must Beware of Taiwan's Reckless Leader
William Lai is lurching toward formal independence, which could trigger a catastrophic U.S.-China war, writes Lyle Goldstein.

A "current state of play" piece.
Correction: they are not necessarily "dying their hair pink" but they are coloring their hair one way or another for social media posts. Still funny, though.

Never a dull moment. Mirror Media is alleging nefarious behaviour by Huang. Of course, Huang is not guilty of anything in any court of law and we don't live under trial by Mirror Media, but if is true my analysis is...why hasn't this happened before?

Post-disaster too many people point fingers and blame over shallow, short-term issues that do not get to the core of the problem. People in govt would do well to follow Michael Turton's work, that puts it all in context:

In local Chinese language news, coverage is nuanced and it is possible to follow individual character quirks and character arcs that get washed out in English. Two recent interesting human stories I used as examples:

The election results from last 4 elections (except pres), they were amazingly stable. Despite KMT slightly losing vote share in 2024 in LY, their seat count skyrocketed. Chu maximized turnout where it mattered for KMT, Lai dropped the ball as DPP chair.

All parties have issues now. In DPP, knives are out for Ker, but not only does this risk ultimately distracting from what the DPP really needs to reflect on following recall debacle, Ker might beat them anyway, making them look toothless ahead of '26.
