Afghanistan was clearly a win for the insurgents. And in the same manner as in Vietnam.
In terms of Ukraine, did Russia get what they really wanted...I would think so. Crimea, the Donbas, most of the existing seaports. Russia took a page from the Germans in WW2 and ground their way across the East.

The problem with this article is they assume that an insurgency can stop a larger invader.

In Afghanistan they did.
In Ukraine they did not.
