A few more pieces for sale by Dean Mattson! They don't last long, often selling before I've had a chance to add them to his website. And no wonder!

Has a great hike yesterday from our campsite near Opuke (Mt. Hutt) and our second outstanding dark skies. When we woke it had clouded over but we still got two great hikes in (Castle Hill and Cave Stream) before we headed into Arthur’s Pass where the rain started. Here we are hunkered and happy.

It took 3 weeks but last night the skies stayed clear and we drove away from the village of Lake Tekapo and it was stunning! Tonight clouds are forecasted to roll in so we’ve driven to Rakaia Gorge where skies should be mostly clear.

Rock art along the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark route ❤️. Also Elephant Rocks and more. What a fun tour.

Some photos from the last few days while holding my breath that skies stay at least partially clear tonight! When we woke this morning at Lake Pukaki there was new snow in the mountains and there’s snow forecasted tonight also higher up, but here in Lake Tekapo it’s looking hopeful.

What was once a small farming community, Oamaru is now a major steam punk centre. While some residents claim to not like it, others say it has made them more open-minded and that it has given young people who may not be into the mainstream a place to feel at home. Something every life deserves.

Loved the steam punk and all the limestone buildings of Oamaru. Visited the childhood home of Janet Frame and on our way to Oamaru checked out the Mouraki Boulders to see the concretions. After which it poured.

A great day with the highlight the Te Anau glow worm caves. 63 metres underground we floated down the Tunnel Burn stream, the ceiling lit by the blue lights of the glow worms. No photos were allowed but I’ve included a stock photo. What a world!

I imagine few people come to Wanaka without taking a picture of the Wanaka tree. And you can’t come to Wanaka without visiting The Next Chapter- what a fabulous bookstore! A beautiful day and hopefully some clear sky tonight.

A beautiful day in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Because it’s the full moon, the moon’s light obscured all but the brightest stars last night but that was okay- it was like looking at the most basic planisphere and since I’m just learning the brightest stars here they were easy to see 😊.

Wayne Sawchuk and I walked up to Mt. John’s Observatory today, Aotearoa/New Zealand’s main astronomical research facility. We chose the one hour (ie steep) hike up then the more leisurely two hour hike back down but got caught in a major thunderstorm. Getting very dark - but with clouds so no stars.

They don’t call Wayne Sawchuk a conservationist for nothing 😊. Our van’s a little short on head room and smallest in this sold out holiday park, but easier on the Earth! And camp coffee is excellent thanks to our borrowed French press. Heading out shortly for Lake Teka

Day 1 of our Aotearoa/New Zealand adventure and what a memorable one! Picked up van, then had a visit with Randy and Judy Miller who live near Christchurch. What a fun time with truly generous and wonderful humans. So grateful. Tomorrow we head to Lake Tekapo.

Thank you to Aaron Williams and RC Shaw for being such generous, thoughtful hosts of their University of Kings College-backed podcast, Further Reading. I was honoured to be a guest (apologies for mis-quoting the villanelle form 😯 but what a fun interview.

Thanks to all who generously took time in 2024 to review Asterisms or carry out an interview (including Rob Taylor, Catherine Owen, Gillian Harding-Russell, Sheila Peters, Pearl Pirie) and to Poetry in Transit for including a poem in their program. Wishing everyone a safe and healthy 2025. ❤️

Thanks Fiona Lam for taking the picture of my poem on Vancouver Transit Bus #4 and Lorri Neilsen Glenn for pointing it out. Living in rural BC, I’ll likely never see one in person so this is the next best thing!
