TFW when you discover a book you slept on when it came out years ago, and kick yourself harder and harder for it with each story you read...

I LOVE the Libby app... just the specific issues of THE NEW YORKER I want with none of the waste! And now I get to settle in with a new Sam Lipsyte story.

I missed celebrating Julia Child's birthday yesterday.

Follow her example and be the cook threatening to bust a cap in Jacques Pepin's ass that you want to see in the world.

7. RIVETHEAD: TALES FROM THE ASSEMBLY LINE by Ben Hamper, aka "Flint [Michigan]'s answer to Harvey Pekar." I have wondered how, say, R. Crumb would've illustrated some of these folks who, in my mind at least, lived and talked like their Cleveland equivalents I grew up around.

6. THE GIRL IN THE FLAMMABLE SKIRT by Aimee Bender. One of my "I wanna write like this when I grow up" books. Plus, it has the story "Call On Me" with one of my favorite literary quotes ever:

"I want to be violated by insight."

5. Not this particular collection necessarily, but basically the entire AMERICAN SPLENDOR oeuvre by Harvey Pekar. Harvey's from Cleveland. I'm from Cleveland. It is something to read about times and places you lived in when and where the writer did.

4. THE FRAN LEBOWITZ READER which combines her books METROPOLITAN LIFE and SOCIAL STUDIES. Actually one of the first non-fiction book not assigned to me that I ever bought for myself, because her numerous appearances on Letterman (on NBC) showed her humor and mindset were right up my alley.

3. HOWARD WHO? by Howard Waldrop. My 3rd favorite book/story collection. The first few years of my con-going experience was following Waldrop like someone follows The Grateful Dead. Have a signed copy, but can't get another as he's passed.
