Most armchair pundits are so focused on tactics that they have no idea how to think about strategy. I learned this as a union leader: begin with your shared values and build from there. Disputes about tactics derail solidarity time and again; don’t fall for it.

It’s a fantasy that we can win by ostracizing everybody in the party who isn’t within an inch of one’s own ideology. If this were an easy task with an obvious solution, we would have accomplished it by now.

We found out one week ago that the way we win is with a big tent. Lobby your electeds, keep up the pressure, but don’t kneecap the movement by dismantling the coalition and going for one another’s throats. This kind of vicious factionalism is how we got here in the first place.

And once again, exactly as we did 10 years ago, we eat our own and do exactly what the right (and Putin) are hoping for: spreading the message that the problem isn’t MAGA, or Trump or Mike Johnson or all their cultish following, but a handful of Dems in the Senate, “establishment” vs “progressive.”
