Here's an old shot of one of my girls from 2015-2016. She was a Big Bend variation of Phidippus audax from North Florida.
This population has incredible color pattern variation and often retain their juvenile colors into adulthood.🌿 #inverts #Phidippus #macro

Here's a shot of the fog that was over the Missouri River a couple days ago after it had lifted earlier in the morning.

Here's my two apache girls that I recently got from a collector in Texas. I'm hoping at least one of these beauties produces a good eggsac. This is a late summer to fall-maturing species. In cooler climates, females will overwinter and produce eggsacs in spring. 🌿 #Phidippus #apacheanus #inverts

Hello Fall.

These are shots of four "Prairie purpuratus" penultimate males from Northwest North Dakota. This is where P. texanus merge with P. purpuratus. It seems incorrect to call it a hybrid zone. They represent a cline throughout the Central Plains and across the north. 🌿 #inverts #arachtober #jumpingspider

This girl was collected a few weeks ago in Central Florida.
I began collecting and keeping these Phidippus regius in 2003. It's been a few years since I kept this species, and it's impressive how much larger she is compared to my other jumpers. 🌿 #inverts #spiders #bugsky #arachtober

Found this Phidippus clarus adult male guarding this penultimate female in Central Florida last month. This fall-maturing species can be found in wet habitats throughout Florida. The females make conspicuous egg sacs near the tops of shrubs and on seedheads of forbs. 🌿 #spiders #inverts #arachtober

Phidippus purpuratus penultimate female, NW North Dakota. This girl will overwinter as a penultimate and then mature next spring. Overwintering is critical for these northern females to know when it's time to make their egg sacs. 🌿 #jumpingspiders #Phidippus #inverts #arachtober

I found this girl in Florida two weeks ago.

Phidippus otiosus adult male, Highlands County, FL 2015
This boy was very large for this species at 17mm body length. I found him in a P. otiosus population, but he likely had some P. regius mixed in. He was super chill and a great pet jumper. 🌿 #Phidippus #jumpingspiders #inverts

Phidippus otiosus female, Highlands County, FL 2016
I always enjoyed finding this species in Central Florida. They often have more orange scale color and larger body size than individuals farther North. This is likely due to introgression with P. regius. 🌿

Phidippus texanus penultimate female on Echinacea angustifolia stalk, Williams County, ND. This is the northernmost edge of their range. They were previously believed to only extend into Nebraska, but they are found in the northern prairie with P. purpuratus. 🌿 #Phidippus #jumpingspider #inverts

High on Fire - hung, drawn, and quartered
Contaminated 5.0 was a great CD that I found at CD Warehouse over 20 years ago.
I discovered High on Fire, Alabama Thunderpussy, and Neurosis from that disc.

Large Carolina wolf spider female (H. carolinensis) from this past weekend in northeast Florida. She was a beauty. 🌿 #invert #spiders #Hogna

Latrodectus geometricus male with female, South Florida.
I didn't stick around to record them mating. This was recorded around 3 a.m. in outdoor lighting. 🌿 #inverts #spiders #Latros

A beautiful L. geometricus female I had found on a sign post while in Florida the past few weeks. This particular sign and adjacent fire hydrant had several adult females living side by side with multiple eggsacs and young juveniles. 🌿 #inverts #spiders #Latros

A few spiders from North Florida yesterday - two large H. carolinensis females and an Argiope florida female with a nearby eggsac. These wolf spiders were massive. I saw several of these Florida Argiope along with many other spiders. 🌿 #invert #spiders

A few jumpers from Central Florida this week: a Maevia species female (undescribed), a P. clarus female, and a P. pius female with eggsac.
It's been a long time since I've been back to my old favorite places after moving away years ago. 🌿 🕷

This girl is one of the prettiest P. purpuratus - texanus intermediary individuals that I've found here in the northern prairie. I collected her as a penultimate in late summer of 2023. She matured in early spring last year. This scale color is quite unique for these jumpers. 🌿 #invert #Phidippus

I've had this silly obsession with Phidippus purpuratus, texanus, and ardens the past few years. They're classified as three distinct species, but they seem more like a species continuum that has had population isolation and reconvergence since the early Pleistocene. 🌿 #inverts #Phidippus
