Colonial Historian, Interested in colonial veterans and all things Algeria. Proud Dub .
Hard to see through all the bluster, cynicism and bloated rhetoric of Trump et al but is this potentially positive? Hoping against hope that there will be a peace deal that can actually provide a sustainable peace for Ukraine and bring an end to this horrible war.

Honoured to have been featured in tonight's DJ Carey documentary scoffing down a Snickers at the Walsh Cup final back in my youth. I was not aware of his crimes at the time and Dublin won on the day!

My former colleagues at French in Bristol are hosting the wonderful Prof Soulemayne Bachir Diagne, one of the most interesting contemporary philosophers thinking critically about the limits and potential of universalism.

If you liked Gramsci's Prison Notebooks, your going to love Nicolas Sarkozy's book about his 11 days in prison... and it'll be out just in time for Christmas.

Vindication for the short lived Maoist group in Shandon, Cork in 1970. Their shop may have been smashed up by a local mob but their long march through the institutions has, according to David McWilliams in today's Irish Times, worked because everyone on the Irish Left is now "Maoist-Third Worldist".

Finally drafting my paper for the @sfps.bsky.social conference on Fanon. I'll be talking about how the origins of the racist colonial psychiatry against which Fanon struggled in Algeria lay in the experience of mass mobilisaiton of colonial subjects during WWI.

It's that time of the year again when I absolutely cannot shift a cough so I'm working from bed. At least it gives me an excuse to dig out some of my favourite archival photos: Algerian nationalist leader Messali Hadj working from bed.

An absolutely fascinating paper from @mauricejcasey.com this evening. Invite him to your seminars. The research is so fascinating and he gives such a masterclass in both writing and in presenting that grad students will really benefit from.

Ah breathnú ar Nuacht Tg4 agus iad ag labhairt faoin ár uachtarán nua. So lovely to see pobal na Gaeilge speaking of their joy at seeing an ally of the language and their communities elected. Analysis from the ever insightful Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh. These two lads are her neighbours from the Claddagh😍

I seem to be the only historian in Ireland who doesn't have a photo from the Arás but I do have one from the Embassy in Rome where I was younger, slimmer and had more hair!

Went to see Lisa O'Neill in De Barra's in Clonakilty and it was a piece of magic for Samhain. The opening act Rosie McCarthy was an amazing young talent (only 17) carrying on the proud tradition of Traveller singing. Lisa was as moving as ever and the whole event was just wonderful .

Great news from New York. A positive and radical platform can win. Looking forward to shoehorning a discussion of Zohran's father's theories of the legacies of indirect rule and Postcolonial polities in Africa into small talk for the next few weeks.

Dan O'Brien suggesting the time has come to abandon the cause of nuclear non proliferation. Appears to be willing an even more dangerous world into existence. Not a thought spared here for those communities from Algeria to the Pacific and beyond who were devastated by testing not to mention Japan.

20 years since Zyed (17) and Bouna (15) died while fleeing the police despite being completely innocent. Racial profiling and police brutality remain endemic in France. A young black or North African origin man is 20 times more likely to be stopped and searched.
