The consumerism is probably an insulating factor. If you kill yourself after a mass shooting, you'll never see what is coming out at shot show next year.

If you're asking in good faith, a lot of skill building and community. Tons of USPSA/IDPA/IPSC shooters love the sport and the community, and you're competing against yourself more than anything. Encourages tinkering with equipment, ammo, etc. Same with shotgun sports like clays.
