Lapsed academic, idler, some time medievalist. "Phlegmatic" apparently.
Sir Oliver Ingham, d.1344, Seneschal of Gascony, defender of Bordeaux, conqueror of (part of) the Agenais at the beginning of the 100 Years' War, lies uncomfortably on his bed of pebbles in the chancel of Holy Trinity, Ingham, Norfolk, in dappled light.

Pavement in front of Becket's shrine in the extended, post-fire east end of Canterbury Cathedral. Astrological/monthly labour roundels clearly reordered and incomplete after being moved post fire. But the Opus Sectile? Cosmati as recently suggested? Hmm. Doesn't look right. Must read Warwick Rodwell

It's the Feast of St Nicholas tomorrow, an important holiday in many parts of Europe.
Here is St Nicholas in late 11thC frescoes in the great Carolingian monastery at Novalesa, high in the Cottian Alps near the Mont Cenis pass above Susa, calming the waters and with St Eldradus, an early Abbot.

St Margaret's, Paston. The Pastons lived next door, but lavished more patronage on Bromholm Priory, a mile down the road, than on St Margaret's. It's quite a modest, aisle-less building, mostly C14, though the nave is wide (recalling Elsing, also early C14) covered by a mesmeric scissor-braced roof

Raddington, Somerset. One of the more remote churches I've visited. In the Brendon Hills near Exmoor. Unusually for the area, the tower had been recently rendered.

Tash Rabat, Kyrgyzstan. Conventionally held to be a 15th century caravanserai. Located above 3000 metres in the Tian Shan mountains near the Torugart Pass leading down to the Tarim Basin and Kashgar on one of the routes of the Silk Road.
