Part of the problem is Richard Dixon, who became Calasso's translator of choice and rendered many of his passages incomprehensible (e.g. "“balsamic bandages" instead of “balm-steeped bandages” etc). Here is the same passage but translated 25 years earlier by Weaver and Sartarelli:
