@dominiccouzens.bsky.social
Professional and award-winning nature writer, columnist for RSPB magazine, Bird watching and Water Life. Many books: most recent "RSPB Birding Year" (Bloomsbury), "An Insect a Day" (Batsford). Also lots of travel writing, e.g. Sri Lanka, Costa Rica.
I recently wrote an article on Firecrests, so it was a particular delight in the New Forest this morning to watch one collecting a huge feather for its nest, going right down to the ground to pick it up. Also a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and some Crossbills! #

Wow, this is astonishing - moving up to 9000km DURING the breeding season!
How much effort have you put in this Valentine's Day?

Research has revealed that male Ruff travel thousands of kilometres in search of mating opportunities over the course of the breeding season:
Male Ruff travel thousands of kilometres in lekking season
A new study on Ruff movements has defied traditional ideas about bird migration and breeding, with some males covering up to 9,000 km in search of a mate during the nesting season.

Completely agree with this.
Rare bats and biodiverse woodland cannot simply be moved, whatever the UK government claims. What should have moved in the HS2 debacle was the route of the line. I wonder why major construction companies preferred to propose a £100M tunnel instead? 🤔 💷🦇🦤. @craigbennett3.bsky.social

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch - a fact for you. Did you know that the amount of black on a male House Sparrow's chest is a reliable indicator of its ability to fight rivals? The larger the area of black, the better the warrior. #naturewriting #biggardenbirdwatch

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is coming up 24-26 January. Here's a perfect guide. Amazon reviewers say: "The best bird ID book I have found by far" and "Witty, informative commentary and beautiful photos". @CarlBovisNature @Natures_Voice @JB_Publishing

Session of washing up was rudely interrupted by the sight of three Otters. I wish that would happen every time.

Any ideas, entomologists? It looks like a caterpillar and it was photographed in lowland forest in Panama in early December. @georgemcgavin.bsky.social? #entomology

On my recent trip to Borneo, one of the mammals I most wanted to see was the wonderful, pot-bellied, big-nosed Proboscis Monkey. I saw them in both Brunei (when one crossed the road in front of the car) and in Sabah. They are still fairly common.
