I make sure to splash around enough that the creature notices me once I’m in the water. I want to get it to focus on me without the small child between us. When the creature turns to me and takes a step forward, I stand my ground, even puffing up my chest to try and make myself look bigger.

I’m not sure the kid even realizes he’s in danger, and the rest of the family seems frozen, except for Jact Sr. and Cameron carefully trying to inch closer. I cut a wide arc around them, wading into the water farther down the shore. Sona is growling at my side without even calling for her.

I grab my sword and leap out of the wagon, ready for a fight. I spot the source of the scream—Marna—and the reason for it: a monster staring down Jact Jr.

It looks and sounds almost cat-like, hissing threateningly at the young halfling - but has scales instead of fur and clearly lives in the water.

Some sort of a necklace or collar has been chained around its neck, a large jewel at its center, and it carries what look like saddlebags on its flanks. The dragon extends its left arm and wing along with it—and I can just make out a hooded and robed figure using it to slide down to the ground.

But only a moment later and it’s back, leaving both Onas and I puzzled as to why. At least until we see the dragon landing near Redwish and the campsite.

The creature is more than three times the size of my house, its black scales looking more obsidian under the red light of the dome.

Happy Halloween Sir! No idea why the orc isn’t in costume… ;)
