I’d rather be swimming. But I’m probably at City Hall.

FERPA requires schools receiving federal funding to handle student data responsibly. Without it, there would be fewer legal consequences for data breaches, improper disclosures, or negligent record-keeping. The “but her emails” crowd should be really mad about this one.

Law enforcement and government agencies could more easily obtain student records without the current legal safeguards, raising concerns about privacy violations and profiling. Libertarians for MAGA, this one’s for you. Not sure who’s gonna protect your kids now!

Employers, colleges, or other institutions would be able to gain access to data without restrictions, potentially leading to discrimination in hiring, admissions, or scholarship decisions. Detention for chewing gum? No thanks.

FERPA grants parents and students the right to access, review, and request corrections to their records. Without it, schools wouldn’t be obligated to provide transparency or correct inaccurate information. Sry to all those MAGA Karens obsessed with control (except when it’s my body).

Educational records contain sensitive information, including grades, disciplinary actions, and personal details. Without FERPA, this data could be used for commercial purposes, targeted advertising, or at worst identity theft (yes this is a problem and yes this has happened).

Without FERPA, schools and universities could freely share students’ personal and academic records with third parties, including businesses, law enforcement, and even the public, without consent.

I know privacy policy isn’t the *sexiest* but, what’s at risk if this goes away? A lot.

How’d we enforce? A very small but mighty team of analysts made sure we were available to parents and students and schools across the nation. We educated, we investigated complaints, and we compelled schools to comply otherwise they’d lose their federal funding.

Why is that important? Transparency, trust, preventing discrimination. Preventing the unauthorized and unlawful commodification of student records— especially with the explosion of online learning. Nbd.

I helped hundreds understand that no, student records can’t be shared or sold without your express consent and yes, you can (and shouldn’t be prevented from) accessing your own records when you ask, and yes, you can have your student record corrected when the information on there is not right.
