in whole tho i do agree that it’s a misstep if someone (corporate or otherwise) comes to unfairly own something that someone else invented.

well, *ideas* can’t be owned but the product of labor that you do to create something novel, useful and “non-obvious” can be—invention can protected the same way authorship can.
