Nothing worth mentioning.
Saturday Night (2024)

The story of making the first episode of SNL. Capturing the insanely hectic and stressful project, the sound mixing is off with best used to keep tension becoming overpowering in parts

While a solid interesting film, it helps if you know who everyone is

The Outlaw (1943)

Not sure if it’s an action, a comedy or an erotic picture. But it’s basically a film for Russell’s breasts. Pushing the boundaries of the MPAA, you can see where the edits had to be made

Fairly dull and contrived, it’s otherwise just a standard 40s western

Funny Girl (1968)

A film pretty much made by Streisand’s performance. Managing to deliver on both the singing and the comedy

While it lulls in the middle, having a straight-forward plot, it’s full of a number of recognisable songs and laughs. It is Streisand’s movie

Juror #2 (2024)

A more morally grey watered-down 12 Angry Men, as Eastwood delivers fairly standard direction on this conundrum

Hoult gives a strong performance and it looks at both the US legal system and struggles of alcoholism. While a bit forced, it leaves open questions

Wild Strawberries (1957)

A film that’s a reflection on life in old age. With dreams and memories being mixed into a short roadtrip

While there isn’t much story, it’s a deeply personal character study that manages to paint the picture of a man

Nosferatu (2024)

The latest version of the German classic. It’s design work and cinematography are outstanding, capturing the eery dark gothic feel. The prosthetics are great, it all comes together to deliver a gorgeous film

A simple but sexually charged story. A great retelling

The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

While it takes you a while to figure who’s who, this is a fascinating film that while slow is tense throughout. Waiting for the titular murder

A visual masterpiece, it is gorgeous to look at. And filled with great actors

The Conversation (1974)

Conveniently released at the time of Watergate, this film shows the extent of surveillance. But more importantly it’s about paranoia, a fear of being spied on and what it’s used for

Coppola delivers an intriguing film but it’s Hackman’s fantastic performance that makes it

A Bridge Too Far (1977)

With a fantastic star-studded cast, this classic war film shows what can happen when an over ambitious plan goes wrong. And the tragedy of it

Attenborough delivers a film that needs to be seen to be believed. With the scale of the action and destruction
August 4, 2025 at 6:37 PM
The Brutalist (2024)

A well crafted film of immigration. Either being rejected by society or having what you have to offer being abused by the rich and powerful. Also of drug addiction and obsession

Using its 3 hours well. The imagery and cinematography is absolutely outstanding, as is Brody

Sliding Doors (1997)

Very much in the style of the 90s British rom-coms, but with a twist. Having the clever idea to show two versions of her life concurrently, making this a unique and interesting film

Paltrow gives a strong performance though the editing’s a bit off in parts. A fun film

Collateral (2004)

A slick thriller from Mann. It somehow manages to work well with the early digital cameras

Cruise and Foxx are both amazing and make this film engaging through their performances alone. Along with some memorable scenes and quick action, this is a great film

When Worlds Collide (1951)

A sci-fi that definitely predates the Space Age. This has both the 50’s pulp and the classic disaster movie motifs to it

While the effects are very dated, and it’s rather predictable, it has a nice corniness to it
July 31, 2025 at 6:54 PM
The War of the Worlds (1953)

The 50s pulpy sci-fi take on Well’s classic novel. For the time the effects and imagery are great, though now have a fun campiness

Much more pessimistic and thoughtful than others of the time, but trades out the imperialism message for military action
July 31, 2025 at 4:39 PM
Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)

The definitive adaptation, made in the of the iconic novel. This film is utterly grim and grey and captures Orwell’s drab depressing world

Of course it’s full of the insightful commentary on authoritarianism from the novel. But Hurt’s performance is simply outstanding
July 30, 2025 at 5:38 PM
The Aviator (2004)

The story of Howard Hughes. How he revolutionised the air industry and his declining mental state

With DiCaprio leading the epic, with Scorsese delivering distinctive cinematography. They beautifully portray a man struggling as he fights adversity
July 27, 2025 at 6:07 PM
The Substance (2024)

Delving into ageing, the male gaze and self-control, this film from Fargeat has a lot to say. While also being a psychological body horror

With distinct imagery and amazing prosthetics, it stands out. And Moore and Qualley give outstanding performances
July 26, 2025 at 5:35 PM
The Sixth Sense (1999)

A great iconic twist. A simple idea but delivered brilliantly, with most the film focusing on the characters and their lives. Closer to a family drama than a horror

Whilst Willis is great it’s the fantastic child performance by Osment that makes it

An absolute must-see
July 21, 2025 at 6:24 PM
Performance (1970)

With its sporadic editing, this is certainly a film of its time with all the sex and drugs and music

An exploration of identity as a gangster’s persons starts to merge with a pop star’s. Led by fantastic performances by Jagger and Fox
July 20, 2025 at 6:11 PM
Conclave (2024)

The political thriller within the Catholic Church. A well thought-out and researched story showing the process. The traditional juxtaposed with mundane modernity. The differing views and beliefs

A great cast but particularly Fiennes is outstanding. Also the score and imagery
July 18, 2025 at 6:26 PM
Rambo (2008)

Stallone returns to the role after 20 years and it’s like he never left

Filled to the brim with action, now much more gory with blood everywhere, it makes for another action romp. Though does bring attention to the Burmese War and how war/genocide is hell
July 17, 2025 at 6:12 PM
Rambo III (1988)

Rambo returns, this time in Afghanistan. The change of setting again adds an interesting dimension, shining a light on a forgotten part of the world, even if it is all explosions and action again

Another good piece of 80s action that’s sure to entertain
July 16, 2025 at 6:12 PM
Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)

Still with plenty of action, now returning to Vietnam. It still makes for a great fun Stallone action even if there’s less sincerity

The politics may be rather questionable, but it’s best not to think too much about what it’s saying and just enjoy the explosions
July 15, 2025 at 6:38 PM
First Blood (1982)

A classic 80s action film, interestingly set in Oregon with the enemy being the local police

Filled with post-Vietnam angst, this is full of clever action and Stallone is as brilliant as ever. Surprisingly coming to a poignant point at the end
July 15, 2025 at 3:08 PM
12 Angry Men (1957)

A 1-room drama with 12 actors. A low budget from a first-time director. Absolute perfection

All the performances are great, but particularly Fonda. In this well thought-out story that says a lot about society and human nature

Go see it now
