It's up to the dm personally (which is the boring answer) but my answer as a dm is id let the player use a small multiplier since (depending on the spell) it would be more powerful up close

As an undergrad rn, this idea is literally so adorable and a class that ends up engaged in it I can definitely see being like "I'm so excited, we get to use the type writers!"
