Every year my brother and I “improve” the family nativity scene. For 2024 we went with a Warhammer 40K theme.
A Jim Shore nativity scene with Warhammer 40K miniatures added. Space Marines defend the manger while Tyranids swarm in from all sides. Tyranid Gargoyles swoop in from behind the Jim Shore shepherds. These models are from very early in my Warhammer experience and were painted by me sometime between 1997 and 2001. Space Marines led by their captain and backed up by a Dreadnaught form up around the shepherds and animals in the manger. Sharp-eyed viewers might spot a Tyranid Lictor creeping up behind them. A trio of Tyranid Zoanthropes drift menacingly in front of the three wise men.

My contribution to Christmas Eve dinner is taking full advantage of local North Carolina product.
Three bowls, each with a different style of cooked North Carolina shrimp. We’ve got shrimp scampi, Old Bay-steamed shrimp, and cilantro lime shrimp. The three shrimp together on one plate. Clockwise from top: cilantro lime shrimp on cilantro lime rice, shrimp scampi on spaghetti, and Old Bay-steamed shrimp into the shell.

Was my costume for Hal-Con (Halifax’s big sci fi/fantasy convention) this past weekend a commentary on the relationship between capitalist and imperialist policies? The result of putting effort into making the helmet and doing nothing for the rest of it? Both? It’s both.

This house on my way to work always brings it for Halloween and I respect it so much.

Spent the last week in Scotland for a conference on marine life and renewable energy. A highlight was ID’ing and counting skate egg cases for the Orkney Skate Trust. We found over 80, the majority of which were from critically endangered flapper skates! Orkney is a last refuge for this species. 🦈🐟🧪🦤

Probably the most surreal scene from yesterday’s total eclipse in New Brunswick. I wasn’t prepared for how many side effects there would be during the totality. The temperature and wind both dropped and it was almost like all the natural background noise went alway.

Every year since high school my brother and I have made “improvements” to the family nativity scene.

Who’s ready for more Cape Breton sea creatures? The water around the Ingonish wharf was super clear and teeming with life, including Atlantic mackerel, winter flounder, rock crabs, and evidence that halibut fishing has been quite successful. 🐟
There are at least two winter flounder visible resting on the harbor bottom in this photo, possibly more. A pile of halibut skulls likely from filleted fish on the bottom in Ingonish Harbor. An Atlantic mackerel swims through a sunbeam near the surface. A rock crab scurrying near a discarded fish that it was probably eating before it realized I was there.
