These last episodes of columbo are throwing me. It's such a jump from the 70s-80s feel of the show

When unable to get the final key piece of evidence to convict through his intelligence. He's resorted to scare tactics where as in the past if he didn't have that final piece he would get them to incrementate themselves

Maybe recency bias but 'it's all in the game' is probably my least favorite columbo episode.
Even if it was for the case, faking a relationship with the killer feels off-putting for his personality and the only reason he got a confession was because he went after the killers loved one.
