Saw FRANKENSTEIN today. I think it's really good; gorgeous and gothic and melodramatic in the way only Del Toro can do. I really enjoyed it, and it made me cry like only the best FRANKENSTEINs can.

Another 21st century French horror film that I like is SHEITAN (2006). Vincent Cassel's moustachios are almost worth the price of admission in themselves.

And that’s it for me this Haunt-A-Long! Tune in tomorrow for another horror film that’s well worth checking out. (I took a peek at the schedule and I *love* tomorrow's pick.) Stay safe out there, and make sure you know exactly what you’re putting in your mouth.

I keep thinking about RAW’s opening scene, how it sets the tone before pivoting to what seems like a different story. GMs can do the same thing: narrate something unsettling and seemingly unrelated, then throw it to the players. Have the them spend sessions dreading when the other shoe could drop.

The film also makes some astute observations about the rights of living beings who historically are not considered in those discussions, namely women and animals. Justine doesn’t see a distinction between animal and human rights, unsettling her supposedly more cosmopolitan classmates.

The strangeness of Justine’s new reality is compounded by the veterinary school setting. The audience is constantly disoriented by, say, suddenly being confronted by a horse on a treadmill, or a second year class anaesthetizing a cow. It makes the first week of university that much more alien.

RAW is the French cousin to another young-woman-coming-of-age horror movie, the Canadian GINGER SNAPS. In both, the challenges young women face in their transition to adulthood is symbolized by monstrous transformations, but I find RAW sucks me in way harder. And it’s much grimier.

After eating the kidney, Justine feels terrible. She walks through the rest of the school day in a daze, still covered in blood. That night, she feels like dying. The morning after, though, she starts craving flesh. In a few different ways.

The following day, the underclassmen gather together to learn the rules they’ll have to follow for the next seven days. Then they’re showered in animal blood and line up to eat raw rabbit kidney. Justine insists that she won’t do it, she’s a vegetarian, just ask her sister. Alexia makes her eat it.

At the party we meet Alexia (Ella Rumpf), Justine’s older sister. She insists that Justine can handle the initiation but Justine isn't sure. She shows Justine photos of the previous classes. The students are all covered in blood; some have Xs over their faces. If their parents survived, so can she.

The hazing at this school is unhinged. The first night, Justine and her roommate Adrien are woken up in the middle of the night, forced to stand in the hallway in their underwear, and then taken to a mystery location where…there’s a crazy veterinary school rave!
October 28, 2025 at 1:58 AM
They’re off to drop Justine off at university. She’ll be going to the same veterinary program where her parents met, and that her older sister is currently attending. Soon they’ll be a full family of vegetarian veterinarians. (Say that three times fast.)
October 28, 2025 at 1:58 AM
Then, we’re at a cafeteria with young Justine (Garance Marillier) and her parents. They're a family of seemingly militant vegetarians: when she nearly eats a piece of errant meat hiding in her mashed potatoes, her furious mother accosts the cafeteria worker. Her father all but rolls his eyes.

RAW opens with a strange sequence: a young woman walks alongside a tree-lined French highway, taking her time as cars race by. As one car approaches, she suddenly lunes towards it: the driver loses control and smashes into a tree. The woman lies still on the pavement. Then, she slowly sits up.

Happy Hallo-week, everyone! We’re getting so close to the actual day that I can practically taste it. Speaking of taste, for today's #hauntalong I’m going to tell you why you should watch the 2016 French coming of age horror gem RAW. Let’s dig in.

Got my Hallowe'en manicure this afternoon so I'm now fully ready for the spookiest week of the year.

THE GERMAN CHAINSAW MASSACRE (aka BLACKEST HEART): a horror movie so grimy and audacious that every one of its 63 minutes had me baffled, disgusted, and sometimes even delighted. If you like bad taste, political humour, and Germans shouting at the top of their lungs, give it a shot.

Horror is a genre that can hold a lot of things inside it. Giant atomic monsters, terrifying folk legends, Victorian era patchwork men, unkillable masked murderers, and, if you’re in the right mood, even kung fu vampire killers. Follow the #Hauntalong for even more horror goodies…if you dare!

As uneven as the film is, it's also fun and strange if you embrace it. In games, embracing the strange can lead to some surprisingly memorable moments. A side character who’s there for exposition might become the group's favourite NPC. Instead of leading them away, see where their interest leads.

The fight scenes were directed (uncredited) by the legendary Chang Cheh, and they’re fun showcases for the Hong Kong actors, especially Chiang and Shih Szu as Mai Kwei, Ching's little sister. Watching them kick ass intercut with Cushing swinging a flaming torch is delicious cognitive dissonance.
October 10, 2025 at 9:07 PM
One of the movie’s shining gems is Peter Cushing. The man is a consummate professional, and in his last outing as Van Helsing he shines just as bright as his first time, plus he has great chemistry with co-star David Chiang (Hsi Ching). Plus he cuts a dashing figure in his dandy adventurer’s outfit.

I’m not going to pretend the film is perfect; it’s uneven and suffers occasionally from a low budget. (One of my favourite goofs is when a character takes an arrow in the neck, and you can see the prosthesis fall off as he tumbles downhill.) But if you embrace the shlock you’ll be richly rewarded.
