Presence Primary Care inaugurated our Medicine on the Move series today. We met up at South Shore Park, talked about how to prepare for changes to health care politics in 2025, and went for a walk by the lake.

In 1858, during the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale invented a new type of graph to show military leaders just how many of their men were being lost to disease, mainly infectious (the gray areas). It was way, way more than to battle (the orange areas). Military leaders should know how germs work.

Each month of April 1854 to March 1855 is represented as a circular sector with size representing number of deaths, and colored areas within each sector representing what proportion of deaths were from wounds in battle (orange), disease (gray) or death from other causes (green). Disease deaths hugely outnumber battle deaths. The graph is mostly gray.
