Karekin II, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, was elected in 1994 Catholicos of All Armenians by a National Ecclesiastical Assembly of 400 delegates as Karekin I, being the first Supreme Patriarch with that name. He passed away in 1999, succeeded by the current Catholicos Karekin II.
