Also Trump. It’s not about the drugs.

I wonder if Venezuela has any oil? (I know the answer, of course.)

Loved this dystopian book, although it veers quite close to home in its near-future dystopia (the US President is proudly illiterate.)

“She said the church was a broken compass. That our job always and forever was to refuse Apocalypse in all its forms and work cheerfully against it.”

Ireland understands what it is to be invaded by the military of a wanna-be King. So do Americas. #NoKings (Dublin, 10/18/25)

Turns out it’s the same in Europe. The “early bird” is the Robin.

Sunrise is still 20 minutes away.

Guess which country they no longer ship to, here in Dingle Ireland?

I’ve been reading a lot in retirement, and two books I finished last week stand out for great writing, compelling characters, interesting relationships, and mothers and daughters.

Both highly recommended.

See thread for a little more about each book. 1/3

As a Johnny Cash fan, I am particularly fond of this comment

This is the first book I’ve read in a while that I feel compelled to share in real time. It’s really good.

Inventive format, beautifully written, beautifully translated. Given the prose in English, I’d bet the Spanish is even better, so if you read Spanish, get the original (and report back!)

True, apparently. That’s the Greenland flag on the side.

For those of you bewildered by the Find-Out stage of FAFO, I just want to let you know that you are welcome here in the America that supports all Americans. Let’s work together to reiterate and uphold our national values.

Final blocking before adding the buttons and sending this off. Welcome to the world, sweet babe. I hope we can hold the democracy for you. #knitting

We’re in a constitutional crisis. I’m calling and writing daily, are you?

The text of the letter is in Alt Text except for the final paragraph (too many characters.)

“I have been a weekly, or more, Target shopper for decades. I am done with Target runs until you
reverse this decision that is bad for business, but more importantly bad for humans. Do better.”

Retirement plan #1: write 2 letters per week about important issues.

The first one asks Congress to act in response to the EO defining gender as binary.

Silly me. I happen to believe in the radical idea that we all have inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The People’s Rally in Bend OR. Small, but mighty. It’s a change from DC, but here with my family - son, sister (in yellow), three cousins.

Today was my last day as a USGS employee. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the American people in this capacity.

I’m looking forward to continuing to serve the country by supporting the values I think are so important-equal rights and opportunities for all-from outside of government.

First book of 2025, On Tyranny. Today is a good day to finish it, or start it. I expect to be coming back to these pages for the next 4 years as I fight for our democracy.

Updated recently, but not reflected in the cr page. Check page 97 for the 2022 invasion of Ukraine for the updated copy.

Support your local bookstore, y’all. @bookpeople.bsky.social is Austin Texas’s great store. Our family has spent many happy hours there.

Clay’s Quilt by Silas House. Another writer worth reading whatever he publishes. They are deeply bedded in place, Appalachia, and full of rich characters.

Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune. The second fantasy book by him that I have read. Loved them both and I have a hold on his next one at the library. This one is about the time between death and ‘heaven’.

A Girl Called Samson by Amy Harmon. Recommended by my 96 year old mother-in-law, so I was not sure what to expect. It was a great historical fiction.

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. Honestly, I avoided this one for a long time because it was everywhere and I thought it would be too saccharine. It was great.
