And thus to enact something that is already part of standard practice makes the law worthless because it attempts to solve problems that don’t exist in any systematic way. That’s why critics have labeled HB8 utterly worthless.

While some of the intent of the law is worthwhile—encouraging schools to share with families struggles that children face, for example—good schools have already been doing this for generations.

The provision banning sexuality or gender identity content in grades K-5 mean that there can be no mention of any family structures—moms and dads in heterosexual relationships fall under the umbrella of sexuality and gender, too.

Students who might on the verge of sharing and identity that will get them hate and misery at home from abusive parents need to understand that they can talk about their “friend” who is thinking of coming out. If it is about someone else, the law’s provisions for disclosure do not apply.
