Cleaned out the file cabinet in my classroom today. Behold the new(ish) talisman of my Comp II classes: a two-liter of generic cola that expired in 2005…otherwise known as before my students were born.

One of my students is researching bonnets and we’ve been talking about different cultural references from Little House on the Prairie to contemporary Black culture. Today, I showed her this, and I think it stole her soul a little bit.

After years of periodically looking online, I purchased a first edition 1899 copy of The Conjure Woman, by Charles Chesnutt (one of my favorite #19century authors). Bonus purchase was this 1973 illustrated adaptation.

Here are some other views with more information. It appears they added Mary Laura (the ML who passed in 1850) to the large monument as well. Note the care to their “beloved and only son.” His dates are decades off from the others so not sure what the lineage is based off the few pics I took.

This family’s plot in NE Florida shows the deaths of at least four children within the span of a few years. To think that a shorter life expectancy made it any easier for the families is just cruel.

If I owned a huge fashion brand, say, American Eagle, I would sue the shit out of ICE for defamation and copyright infringement (or whatever would stick). If these ppl are acting officially, they should be wearing uniforms and present themselves as such.
