Contacted @repdelbene.bsky.social today in response to her speech at yesterday's #HandsOff rally. These are important first steps, but there is so much more that needs to be done.
Part One Dear Congresswoman DelBene, I attended the Hands Off event in Everett this weekend, and I would like to say thank you for attending and for speaking at this important event. I believe more Americans are becoming conscious of the existential threat to our democracy unfolding in front of our eyes, and I appreciate that you take the time to engage with your constituents in these important matters. I am still frustrated with your messaging, though. I see this across all of your emails, social media posts, and now this speech: You are just listing what is happening without offering actions items constituents can take, and more importantly, you never state what you personally are doing about it. I read the news and follow quality independent media sources. Nothing in your communications is new or novel. It feels more like a book report than a call to action, and I say this as a former educator. For example, during your speech this weekend, you said that members of the House are out there holding town halls in red districts. What you didn't say is where YOU PERSONALLY have held a town hall in a red district. You didn't say when YOU PERSONALLY would be holding an upcoming town hall in a red district and which specific districts you would be targeting. I want to know how you, who are entrusted with so much authority and resources, are taking action to stand up to this horror that is unfolding. Specifically, I want to see much stronger language in describing both Trump and the Republicans who are supporting his authoritarian and autocratic policies. Part Two First, I want to hear you and other Democrats use the words tyranny, traitors, fascists, sex offenders, corruption, criminal and illegal activity, dishonor, and dictator when describing these people. I want you to use phrases like "Actions speak louder than words." when describing what is being said versus what is actually being done. I want you to call out individuals BY NAME for their actions, and I want you to unmask everyone from the top of the administration to the law enforcement officers disappearing people off the streets. I want to know who gives the orders and who is following the orders. This is clearly not a time for politics as usual with toned down rhetoric and halfhearted platitudes recycling yesterday's news. Don't repeat the news. Make the news. Second, I want you and every other Democrat in the House to be introducing legislation each and every week that is written to specifically close loopholes and address the abuses of power that are being carried out by this administration. Specifically, I want to see a new article of impeachment introduced by a different Representative once a week until more and more people can't ignore it and begin to sign on. I also want to see legislation to scale back the power of the Executive to make these kinds of unilateral decisions without automatic oversight and review. Then I want to see that publicized and disseminated far and wide! Of course, I understand that the vast majority of these will have no chance of passage in our current congressional makeup, but that isn't the point. The point is that it is being introduced. The point is that Democrats and real American patriots are standing up to offer solutions to solve these problems. The point is to get ahead of the news cycle and change the conversation from shock and awe to solutions and solidarity. As the Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, your role is to helm the efforts to retake the House in 2026 and recruit new members into the party. Please start to be much more visible and vocal in carrying out these very important responsibilities. I am counting on you to step up and swing a big bat against the forces of fascism trying to destroy our way of life. In closing, during yesterday's rally, Rep. Larsen said that there are 576 more days until the midterms, but there is no time to wait that long to begin a much more concerted, visible, and vocal response to the atrocities happening in front of our eyes. He said the people in the crowd need to step up and keep up the pressure between now and then, but this downplays the seriousness of the moment and the fast pace that the rule of law is unravelling. There is no time to wait, and we need elected leaders like you to start using your authority and political power to build a wall against the rising tide of fascism rolling across our great nation. No more book reports please. Bring on the action items!

In fact, our research shows that street protests today are far more numerous and frequent than skeptics might suggest. Although it is true that the reconfigured Peoples’ March of 2025 — held on Jan. 18 — saw lower turnout than the 2017 Women’s March, that date also saw the most protests in a single day for over a year. And since Jan. 22, we’ve seen more than twice as many street protests than took place during the same period eight years ago.

Part of the problem is that these voters only give a shit about people they know personally while everyone else is an other to be targeted for abuse. They also don't make any effort to learn and consider consequences for their actions before doing what they do.
Bartell didn't see it that way. Not when he met Muñoz in the small Wisconsin town where she had worked lawfully on a temporary visa. Not after they spent months filling out the USCIS paperwork to apply for her legal permanent residency. He saw her as a funny, caring, hard-working woman who came legally, not one of the "illegals" who the president he supported promised to deport.
