Despite being shattered post @vicephec.bsky.social conference we had to make an effort to get out to the kite festival this evening in St Anne's. First time seeing the festival at sunset and the illuminated kite display.

Privileged today to host the inaugural Talking Science debate @vicephec.bsky.social where we debated skills and content in UG chem degrees, the role of greater standardisation of degrees and how HEIs could help to ensure a healthy pipeline of applicants. What a fabulous energetic audience!

Today I have been to the furthest west point of the UK mainland - West Ardnamurchan. Takes some effort to get there but definitely worth it!

Perfect conditions for our evening wild swim... and very privileged to get a close encounter with a seal, so close I could hear it breathing... I just stayed super still!

We have been coming to Mull for more than 10 years now and one of our favourite things to do is crabbing. I am the starfish whisperer, they take a lot of patience, my daughter is much better at getting various species of crab, shore, velvet swimming, brown and hermit...

An added dimension to this year's holiday on Mull... they are filming a new series of Balamory while we are here... our friend Lindsey is a body double for Edie McReadie who has swapped the minibus for a boat and PC Plum looks just the same!

We are in Tobermory for our annual summer holiday and it has coincided with the filming of the new series of Balamory! My daughter saw Miss Hoolie when she went to the fish van and then we went out to watch them film and saw Penny, PC Plum and the new cast members.

20 years on and not much had changed in the chemistry building although the demolition of the infirmary and the swanky new buildings that have spring up around have a very different feel to our PhD days..
