have you got an ethernet cable? you can connect two computers directly this way. you would need to set a static ip address on both machines & set up a shared folder but theres plenty of step by step guides around showing you how to do this. would save you unplugging a usb each time :)

knew i was onto something. the ethernet switch went green straight away, was staring at an orange led for hours even tho the mobo nic led was green!
then it was a simple case of installing the generic realtek family driver & directing xp to the NETRTLE.inf from a RTL 8168 x64 driver
success
