I'm back at home, basking after a beautiful weekend at the @aarweb.bsky.social - filled with lots of love, some beautiful brutalism, and a delightful doppelgänging. You all are brilliant, a jolt of hope in this difficult year. ❤️

If you're in Boston this weekend, consider coming along to this panel on sovereignty, aesthetics, and theatrical power - with Ludger Viefhues-Bailey, Alana Dickey, @nicholemflores.bsky.social, Miguel Vatter, and Arthur Bradley. It's going to be great!

I know a number of us are joy-scrolling today, so here's a bit more encouragement: two lovely letters responding to my piece in the Tampa Bay Times defending the humanities.

Yesterday my #FSU class on Religion & Democracy hosted Albie Sachs - anti-apartheid activist and former justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

My students rose to the occasion with questions that were perceptive and profound. I was so proud and impressed by them!

At the State Capitol yesterday for Hands Across The Land: an interfaith prayer vigil to protest the Everglades detention center.

>Defend the Sacred. Return the land.<

Thanks for Betty Osceola, Capital Area Justice Ministry, and the Tallahassee Green Faith Alliance for their leadership!

I have an oped in today's Tampa Bay Times: "The humanities deserve Florida’s public support. Democracy depends on it."

www.yahoo.com/news/article...

"This is the beauty of public universities like Florida State: they give everyone the opportunity to cultivate intellectual freedom."

In London last week, I remembered what it's like to live on foot. There's magic in the spaces in-between, which one can only see while walking.

American politics has many pathologies, but some (I suspect) stem from cities made for cars rather than people...

(In case it needs repeating: yes, covid remains a serious disease. The evidence is clear that there's still lots of it around, and - as I now know - even a mild case can cause lasting harm. Please look out for each other!)

After catching covid in March, my recovery has been extremely slow. Although I'm tired of feeling terrible all the time, I'm grateful that I can convalesce on Florida's Panhandle coast. It's a special place.

Later today I'm chairing a webinar for the American Academy of Religion @aarweb.bsky.social on the crisis of the humanities - and what we can do about it. It's at 3pm Eastern (US) time, and registration is free.
