Thirty-one years ago at the Sports Arena in LA (don’t believe what it says in the archive). The first of 4 nights. I was there for all 4, and they came out of the gate running, with Shakedown Street.

Fifty-six years ago today. The Grateful Dead at The Thelma in LA. Their 3rd night at this tiny club on Sunset. Stephen Stills sat in for part of the 12/10 show. Released as Dave’s Picks #10. Primal and psychedelic ‘69 Dead. Pigpen tunes shine here.

Thirty-six years ago at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood. The second run of shows there in 1989. The Bird Song from this one appeared on Without A Net. A good Playin’/Crazy Fingers/Uncle John’s/Playin’ Reprise in set 2, and a Mr. Fantasy/Hey Jude.

Taking a break from listening to holiday tunes to revisit this show I was at 36 years ago! Anytime they start with “Let The Good Times Roll” is a good thing!

Thirty-eight years ago, at the Long Beach Arena. I was there all three nights, and while its not in the forefront of mind in looking over the setlist (Great Shakedown opener) and reading the the reviews, I know I left that night with a big smile.

Thirty-eight years ago in Long Beach. I was at all three shows, but remember very little if this particular show. Reviewers rave about the Estimated Prophet, as well as the sound quality of the recording.

The listening party has moved on!
Fifty-two years ago at Winterland. Part of the Winterland 1973 Box Set. I’ve heard the Dark Star referred to as the best (not just for 1973), but that’s a very subjective thing. Great Mind Left Body Jam out of Dark Star.

Fifty-eight years ago in Los Angeles. Two shows at the Shrine, with Blue Cheer and Buffalo Springfield. I missed 11/10, so I’m following up with both today. The 11/10 show was released as the ‘67 entry in the 30 Trips box set.

Fifty-six years ago at the old Fillmore Auditorium. Dick Latvala’s favorite show which he “immortalized” on his Dick’s Picks 16 release. Dire Wolf, Easy Wind & the first Cumberland in set 1, and a set 2 that seems a continuous stream of consciousness.

Please join me in sending birthday love to Joni Mitchell, who turns 82 today. One of, if not the best singer songwriters of our lifetime. She transcended the folksinger label and charted a new course into pop and jazz.

Happy Birthday Miss Mitchell!!

Forty-eight years ago. I’ll leave it to Charlie Miller to say what he thought of these shows. “In 1977 the Grateful Dead played one of their greatest 3 cities in 3 days run of shows.” Dick thought enough of this show to release it as volume 34 of his series.

Forty-eight years ago today. After all the tributes to Donna yesterday, it certainly seemed fitting to go for a prime ‘77 show for this morning’s post. Released as Dave’s Picks 12, from Colgate University, it has Donna’s Sunrise in the 1st set.

Fifty-six years ago, at the Family Dog on The Great Highway. A great sounding 69 show with a lot of Pigpen, and a 30 minute Dark Star which has some hints of the Chicago tune, “Beginnings” in it. Released as part of the Dave’s Picks 43 set.

Released on this date fifty-five years ago. Recorded at Wally Heider’s in San Francisco and produced by Stephen Barncard (can you imagine working on this, at the same time as doing the Crosby, If I Could Only Remember My Name, and all those PERRO sessions?).
