I’ve had a splinter that required something I’d almost call surgery. Including local anesthesia and all…. Went straight up under a thumbnail, broke off about an eighth of an inch under there. Scalpel, scissors, forceps and all… So, sure, removing a splinter as surgery? OK. Maybe.

To revisit the “coverage” issue, I was in-office talking to colleagues. One was complaining about a thing that could be surgically repaired and they didn’t know our insurance would cover it. I only knew they would, because I’d just recently had that repaired, and it cost me ~$500 total.

Doctors are typically the biggest fraudsters. Not the patients. The inter-referrals to enhance billing amongst friends; requiring excessive visits; having non-doctors see patients, and bill as if the doctor did; billing for things like individual therapy instead of group therapy…

Insurance companies intentionally make coverage hard to understand. Think of when you were given the option at work (or wherever), and how hard it is to determine which coverage you want.
