Ugh I hate when modules do this to ‘demonstrate the strength of an npc’ or the ‘npc is a twat and we need a way to show this’ - there are much better ways than taking the accomplishment from your players and deflating what should be a celebratory moment.

Shawn! Any tips for designers who don’t generally have troubles putting together an interesting adventure, but always seem to struggle with how to plan the opening/ inciting incident or mission?

Example: The PCs discover their beloved NPC (the rogue's adoptive father) has secretly been helping the BBEG. When they finally confront the BBEG they ask him how they corrupted the NPC and the BBEG responds, "Ah yes, it was easy, he simply asked I spare your friend" and he motions toward the rogue.
