It’s been an emotional time.

FLOW: Genuinely remarkable. It’s that special kind of film that, in its startling simplicity, feels gigantic in every way, an ethereal expression of why being alive and connected with the life around us gives meaning to our existence. At times, it even feels miraculous. Give it the Oscar.

Last Saturday, as part of AACTA Festival, I had the outrageous privilege of sitting down with Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser and chatting with him about his career for over an hour in front of 500 people. I still don’t think I’ve recovered. (Photos: Jennie Wright)

AACTA Awards 2025. First time I’ve ever owned a suit.

QUEER: A pain in the heart, an overwhelming, all-consuming longing that takes you by the throat and never lets you go. I’m giddy, haunted, moved to tears, gently shaken, quietly dazzled. It’s hard not to see yourself in its mirror, feel its fervent whispers in the dark are meant especially for you.

It’s done. The Disney Renaissance season of INK & PAINT is finally written.

Ten films. Eleven episodes. 487 pages. Three years of work.

You bet I fuckin’ cried when I finished it.

Did arms, workout fuelled by anger at the Oscars music branch.

COMPANION: A familiar horror satire with a contemporary lick of paint, but still not offering you anything you haven’t seen before. I wish it had been bolder, nastier, less derivative, less enamoured with the sound of its own voice. Sophie Thatcher is easily the standout though.
January 23, 2025 at 10:47 AM
Tonight’s Screening: COMPANION. Hopefully, like BARBARIAN, this is a nasty, inspired little film and, unlike BARBARIAN, actually lands its ending.
January 23, 2025 at 8:25 AM
SING SING: A tender, gentle miniature, overflowing with heartache and sincerity. We’re used to being told about the healing power of art but this is the rare film where that process feels palpable. Maclin has such commanding presence and dexterity, and Domingo is just stellar, truly stellar.
January 22, 2025 at 11:30 AM
BABYGIRL: What if Ibsen fucked? A wonderfully thorny, opaque, deeply sexy film, carefully questioning and dissecting the dynamics of power through an exchange built on the exploration of it. Kidman is superb, Dickinson is enthralling and there’s real imagination and bravura in the filmmaking.
January 15, 2025 at 11:22 AM
Tonight’s Screening: BABYGIRL. The trailer made me rabid with excitement so we’ll see how I fare with the whole film.
January 15, 2025 at 8:26 AM
WE LIVE IN TIME: A good script and strong direction elevated by two wonderful performances. The smaller, intimate, almost incidental moments have more power than the main drama, which despite the structure, offers little we haven’t seen before. No more than what you would expect, but still charming.

Good run.

Also, I cannot tell you how much I love Gromit. I adore Gromit. I would die for Gromit. I want nothing but safety and happiness for Gromit.

WALLACE & GROMIT - VENGEANCE MOST FOWL: Yet another slam-dunk for Aardman’s crown jewel. The story cracks with wit, the animation is sublime and the pastiche of noir cinema is, as always, pitch perfect. I laughed myself silly and gasped with delight. Give it the Oscar.
