Clapton had previously played with his Derek & the Dominos bandmates touring with Delaney & Bonnie. In 1979, Bramlett would clock Elvis Costello for using racial slurs against Ray Charles & James Brown during a drunken argument with Stephen Stills.

While on tour with Stills in 1979, Bramlett punched Elvis Costello in the face at a hotel bar in Columbus, Ohio, after Costello referred to James Brown as a "jive-ass [deleted]” and Ray Charles a "blind, ignorant [deleted]." Bramlett having brought his remarks to the attention of the press, Costello apologized at a press conference in New York City a few days later, stating he had been drunk and had been trying to be obnoxious in order to bring the conversation to a swift conclusion. According to Costello, "it became necessary for me to outrage these people with about the most obnoxious and offensive remarks that I could muster."

Allman later called Dowd to let him know that his band was in town to perform a benefit concert on 26 August. When Clapton learned of this he insisted on going to see their show, saying, "You mean that guy who plays on the back of (Wilson Pickett's) 'Hey Jude'? … I want to see him play … let's go." Stage hands seated Clapton and company in front of the barricade separating the audience from the stage. When they sat down, Allman was playing a solo. As he turned around and opened his eyes and saw Clapton, he froze. Dickey Betts, the Allmans' other lead guitarist, picked up where Allman left off, but when he followed Allman's eyes to Clapton, he had to turn his back to keep from freezing, himself.

In Part 1 of Peter Jackson’s new three-part documentary, The Beatles: Get Back, George told Ringo Starr and director Michael Lindsay-Hogg about a song he’d written the night before. He’d watched a BBC 2 program called Out Of The Unknown the night before. After that, a program called Europa came on, which was “a look at pomp and circumstances through European eyes.” The waltz scene inspired George to write “I Me Mine.” He played it for the rest of the group, but they didn’t seem overly enthusiastic about it.
