Bonus speculation: I think all four of these factors are missing most acutely in the lives of the disaffected young men who are increasingly attracted to the antisocial masculinity offered by the Peterson-Tate-Trump axis.

4) action: there is real pessimism about effecting change in one's life, whether at work or in larger society. Union activism brings real tangible benefits (not just economic) as a result of one's actions, which is a rare, magical feeling.

3) struggle: forming a union, bargaining against management, and being ready to strike are all adversarial acts. People need adversity and antagonists in life! The huge reserve of pent-up anger that we see reflected in politics has been redirected against immigrants and others, instead of bosses.

2) solidarity: organizing as a group for a collective goal requires building connections and trust with other humans, something that is severely degraded in the US. It's a real challenge to get people to care about the well-being of others but it's incredibly powerful when it happens!

1) economic: the primary goal of labor organizing is the improvement of economic conditions of workers. There is substantial evidence to show that in USA higher unionization rates are historically associated with higher labor wages and lower income inequality. home.treasury.gov/news/feature...
