Something that many people don't realize is that if they lost electricity, all of the food they gathered this summer is also lost. People rely on that food over the winter and to feed their dogs.

Sometimes, but I am more interested in the initial post and the person I am following than in random brain detritus from the rest of the world. Sometimes the comments are interesting or funny though.

Good luck. When I figured it out, I gave my head a smack because it was so obvious. It was something I was interested in since elementary school. One of my friends was identifying historic artifacts (mostly ceramics) since he was 14. It is great when you can mesh your other interests.

Pick the thing you are most interested in because you are going to have to live with it for a long time. I found I hated lithics, but faunal completely absorbed me.

The research/writing portion gets done in the summer, often unpaid, because that is what counts toward promotion. The rest of the year is filled with teaching, working with graduate students, and committee work. The best part of the summer was having weekends. Wrung dry & retired last year.

I started following you after seeing posts you made elsewhere. Then I gradually figured out you were an author of some sort, but I didn't know of what. Then you talked about writing science fiction and about some of your books and I was thinking, "Oh, huh. I used to read science fiction."
