In Friday the 13th for the NES, when you're exploring the lakeside cabins, Jason can randomly pop up and fight you. Nowadays it's clear the game kind of sucks, but when you're like five years old, it's pretty spooky!

And it's not like they didn't have higher-fidelity models to work off of either. You can see the link between MGS3 Ocelot and MGS5 Ocelot, while the remake Ocelot is just a completely different person for no reason.
