With Best Picture-nominated I’m Still Here, apt messaging and a firm, worthy performance from Torres lifts an otherwise decent film overall about the military dictatorship in Brazil. 🇧🇷

I’m not confused, now, as to why Nosferatu received 4 noms this year, on the technical side. Eggers’ framing, 19th century sets and costume design levitate this Gothic horror above an otherwise anemically paced and emotionally distant retelling.

Saw the The Brutalist today and what an ambitious swing from Brady Corbet! It’s my number 1 for 2024, due to excellent performances, a sweeping score, and timely messaging for 2025.

What’s one film you loved as a kid that still holds up today?? For me, it’s Hook. It was panned by Silent and Boomer Generations, and even Spielberg really critiqued his own work. But it’s held up for many older and younger Millennials as a cult classic!

What’s one performance that elevated a recent film, even if the film itself for you was just okay? Mine: Glen Powell in Twisters

What’s one film you’ll defend as a masterpiece, even if it’s divisive or is generally rated lower than you personally would?? Mine: Inside Out.

Scrolling through BlueSky as a newcomer feels like enjoying a drink with a friend in a chill bar, savoring an intellectual discussion— especially after years spent in an endless, deafening nightclub.
